As expats, many of us often have to go through the process of sending our possessions back home. If you are looking to export your car, regardless of the reason, check out the procedures and documents required to ensure your wheels reach their desired destination without any hiccups.
Required documentation
The first step to exporting your car is cancelling the vehicle registration. You will have to head down to Road & Transport Authority (RTA) and hand in all the required documents, cancel the registration and get the Export Certificate. The documents needed to do this include:
- Vehicle registration card (original)
- Passport and Emirates ID (original and copies)
- Export insurance certificate
- Passport copy of the person receiving the car in the final location
- The car license plates

Keep in mind, if your car is not registered, you will have to get an export vehicle test at the registered RTA testing centers. They will check the chassis number on the body of the car against the number on the engine to ensure it matches and charge a fee for carrying out the test. In case your car is not registered under your name but under your company’s name, you also have to submit the trade license of the company.
If your car was bought via a car loan, you will also have to present the Mortgage release letter. It is a letter given to you by the bank after you have settled your outstanding loan amount.

After cancelling your car registration
Once you have all the required documents at hand, visit RTA and bring your car licence plates with you. Submit these at the concerned department and pay off any outstanding fines you may have on your car. Your car registration would now be cancelled and you would receive the Export Certificate.
With the Export Certificate you have the option to get temporary export plates for your car. You can use these to drive legally around the UAE for 15 days, giving you time to complete the rest of the shipping process. The cost of the certificate with the plates is AED 90 and without the plates, it’s AED 20.

Exporting your car
After cancelling your registration, look for shipping agents who will take care of any documentation and procedures to export it from Dubai customs. Remember, you have to pay the shipping agent fees, and any other custom fees or taxes charged when you car reaches it’s final destination. Therefore, make sure you are aware of all policies and charges of the host country before exporting your car.
